Software wont let me complete my e-file because it wants an answer I don't have.
CSA 1099R software on desktop is asking for box 16a. There isn't a box 16A on my CSA 1099R from OPM.
What do I enter?
Using Windows - TurboTax Deluxe 2024

I am assuming that David meant to say "If you haven't already entered an amount in box 16, answer with the amount in box 1 on your CSA 1099-R. " This is our usual workaround for a missing box 16 issue.
Since you appear to have only one state, the amount in box 16 would be the same as the total distribution in box 1.
You are correct, there is no box 16a on Forms CSA 1099-R. There also is no box 16A field in the TurboTax Desktop input. Box 16 is State Distributions. If you haven't already entered an amount in box 16, answer with the amount in box 16 on your CSA 1099-R. If that doesn't work, I would try deleting the form and re-entering. If you previously imported the form, try entering it manually.
Ok, correct there is no box 16A BUT there isn't a box 16 on the CSA 1099R either.
So how do I enter an amount that doesn't exist?
See screen shots:
First shot is in the Federal return error check.
Second shot is in the State return error check.
The last screen shot is of the software screen.

Have you updated your program? Go up to Online - Check for Updates. I entered a CSA 1099R into my Windows Desktop program and box 16 does NOT show up on my screen at all as shown in your screen shot.
@VolvoGirl Not sure, but it might depend on what state is involved.
For my Windows Premier Desktop it doesn't show it either during the interview, but a couple years ago (with NC as resident state) they started automatically transferring the box 2a value into box 16 behind the scenes....and when I look at it in Forms Mode, the box 2a value is already entered in box 16
For Indiana I think they (Indiana) made some changes this year, and that is new, and perhaps the software people haven't implemented the box 2a transfer yet, or don't know if 2a-to-16 is valid for Indiana.
These answers are so frustrating, at least for me. The OP is extremely patient.
The CSA 1099-R form from OPM has NEVER had a box 16. The lack of Box 16 has never been an issue for Turbotax, until now.
I went back to my 2023 Turbotax to see how how it handled the 1099R data Of course, Turbotax had to download updates first, and now my 2023 Turbotax is complaining about Box 16!?! Nice.
t tried populating Box 16 with the Box 2a value, and then the Box 1 value and compared it to the Fed and State tax values with Box 16 blank. It made no difference to my Fed and State (Ohio) taxes.
I looked at my State return. I cannot see an impact, anywhere in my Ohio return, as a result of Box 16.
My 2023 and 2024 Turbotax are current as of Feb 8 2025.
Turbotax should not be asking for data that has never existed. Please fix it.
Some TurboTax customers with a 1099-R may have an issue when trying to enter their state distributions.
