Credit for taxes paid to another state

Do I have to pay for the 2nd state to get the information need for Credit for taxes paid to another state.  Is there a way to separate the figure and manually enter on my home state return.  Ridiculous to have to pay $44 for a piddley little capital gain.

Yes, if you need to file the additional state return. Each state has different filing requirements. If it is a state with a minimum filing, you may not need to file the state and the tax would be zero.

If you would like to reply with the state, we can check the filing requirements or you can  contact the Department of Revenue.

When you take a credit for other states, usually, your resident state requires a copy of the other state. We provide that when e-filing.

Virginia Department of Taxation states that a Virginia nonresident is a person who is not a resident or part-year resident, but who receives taxable income from Virginia sources.  Nonresidents file form  763.

You must file an income tax return in Virginia if:

  • You are a resident of Virginia, part-year resident, or a nonresident, and
  • You are required to file a Federal income tax return, and
  • You have Virginia adjusted gross income equal to or greater than the amounts below:
  • Singe or married filing separately  $11,950
  • Married filing jointly                        $23,900
