Colorado state tax

I bought Turbo Tax Deluxe, I've filed the federal and got my refund. Turbo Tax did my state return and I opted not to pay to have it filed, instead I copied what was on the state return as I filed online with the state of Colorado. According to the state form, on line 1 it asks to put in the amount from the Federal 1040 line 11b which is $0.00. But using my printed state form from Turbo Tax that I printed out, the amount shown on line was is -$7,262.00. I used that amount when I filed with the state and just realized that that was wrong. I've sent a message to the state of Colorado about the error wondering if I need to file an amended return with them...still waiting to hear from them.

Why did Turbo Tax put in the incorrect amount?? Everything was filled in automatically by your software so I used your print out. I think you need to verify that your software is doing the State of Colorado correctly.

Thank you,

It depends.

Did you go through the entire interview process for the state return through and do the state review as well?

If you did not, then your state return was not completed.  It will only prepare the return based upon your answers to the questions in the state interview section.  If you did not complete the state questions, then it was not a completed state return.

Yes, I did go through the entire process and got an okay at the end saying there were no errors and the audit review said 100% accurate and audit review "low". When I did a print of the Colorado return just now it is still the same, on line 1 there is a negative dollar amount that does not match anything on the Federal. Line 11b of the Federal is zero which is supposed to be the amount entered on the state line 1.

It sounds like there was negative income because your federal income was less than your standard or itemized deduction. Line 1 may have negative income but does this through off calculations in the rest of the Colorado return.  If not, then the negative income is a non-factor. To verify this, You may wish to contact phone support so they can view your screen to determine the affect, if any, that negative income amount has on your Colorado return. Please select this link for information to contact phone support

I have gone through the Federal and State and made no changes that I could see needing to be done. I have already received my Federal refund, now I'm just going to wait and see what the state of Colorado says. I still do not understand why Turbo Tax entered that amount on line 1 of the state return when it specifically says to enter the amount from the federal return line 11b which is zero. Turbo Tax entered it, not me.

While technically it my be wrong to enter a negative amount as opposed to zero, the two entries have the same affect in this situation so I am confident it will not create an issue with your return being processed properly.

I had the exact same situation, and indeed it doesn't affect the calculations at the bottom. But Colorado Return lines 1, 5, 6 and 7 are all incorrect as a result. I am not confident the state of Colorado will accept that.

The resulting tax on your CO return will be the same whether the lines are zero or less so CO should have no issue.
