The email from Turbo Tax seems to imply that I can re-open my prior tax form and the program will help me fix the form (due to a software issue). But when I do that, it simply tries to re-file the prior form without making any updates?

I am having the same problem. I received the email message which showed the following:
What happened
CA_Itemized - We've identified a potential issue in your California return due to an error in our software.
To update your return
Once you've opened your return in TurboTax, the details about what's causing the problem will be displayed.
From there we can walk you through making the updates you need and help you e-file your return.
I ran TurboTax and it installed some updates. Then, I clicked on my return. I did not see any such information about the details or making the updates I need. And running the review again did not show any problems.
I suspect the problem is related to itemized deductions. I used the standard deduction for Federal, but TurboTax wants to itemize deductions for California; I don't know why TurboTax wants to do that.
So, I don't know what is wrong and I don't know how to fix it and I don't know how to refile. My Federal return was accepted a few days ago.
I guess I'll wait 48 hours and see if new updates appear. I wonder if I can reach the FTB and find out more.
I ran into the same problem. :(
Sign in to your Turbo Tax Account Online via the web.
- Select Federal, then Deductions & Credits
- Visit the following topics if you have potential expenses that may apply:
- Job Expenses, Investment Expenses, etc...
- Go to your California , then select let's check it over.
TurboTax will calculate any changes automatically.
- E-file your return again.
Received the same exact message! Tried to install updates, but received, "failed to install update. Microsoft Installer error:1603. Fatal error during installation." Tried to click on "check for solution" nothing happens!!
Of course I cannot find a Customer Service phone or email, so what to do???
Just hit the send button. I'll provide an update in a couple of days. Fingers crossed
My wife just handed me 1099 R that had a gross distribution of 994.90. The line 2a was empty and the line 4 was 218.88. When I entered that as a subtraction, I noticed the the $1922 that you said i owed the state (which, by the way I paid on the third of February by check) went down to $1904. Please help me fix this problem so it can be refiled. I only got one free state e-file, and I hope you will file it again for free as there was a software glitch that I was not responsible for.
SUCCESS!! Got an email back in an hour or two. Guess they did fix the problem Plan to print the 540 out and see if I can spot what changed.
I waited several days and tried again. This time TurboTax displayed the promised message with a Help Me Fix it button. I updated the itemized deduction (specifically the Tax Preparation fee to reflect the purchase of TurboTax last year). That's the only thing I changed. Then I e-filed California again. And a few hours later I got the text message and email saying that my California return had been accepted. So my problem is fixed.
