NYC RES means NYC resident. You can drop the RES in TurboTax and it should file with no issues. NYC RES just identifies that the tax is assessed on a NYC resident, and NYC in TurboTax does the same.

Same issue this year. Any resolution?

I have a similar issue - my W-2 was issued with "NEW YORK" in box 20 and the system doesn't let me e-file. If I rewrite it to "NYC" will it cause issues that my W-2 has "NEW YORK" listed?
TriNet (PEO) is not willing to re-issue the W-2.
Yes, you may select New York as the associated state and then from the dropdown box for the Locality name, select New York City. Report all wages and taxes in boxes 18 and 19.
When done this way, the NYC taxes withheld on your W-2 should be applied to your New York income tax return.
I have the same question. I changed mine to “NYC” but didn’t submit my return bc I’m unsure if it’s going to cause a problem. Getting a reissued W2 is an option, but I don’t want to spend the time chasing that down if I don’t have to.
You do not need a corrected W-2. There are only two options for local tax in New York: Yonkers and New York City (NYC).
When you choose New York in the drop-down menu under the heading Local taxes, enter Box 18 and 19 as shown on your W-2 and select New York City from the drop-down menu in Box 20.
I have attached a screenshot below for additional guidance.
Thank you!!
Enter NYC instead.
Im also having a problem. On my W2 it has "NYLOC" for box 20 but its telling me its not accepted by the NY Dept. of Taxation and Finance.
If you live and work in New York City, put NYC in Box 20 in TurboTax no matter what your physical W2 actually says. It must say NYC in Box 20 to pass e-file diagnostics.
I keep getting an error message in TT about the NYC code in box 20. It will not take it (this year). is there a work around?
Have you typed in exactly the letters NYC in Box 20? No matter what appears on your W2 in Box 20, you must use the letters NYC in Box 20 for the return to e-file if you have amounts in Boxes 18 and 19 showing local wages and local taxes paid to New York city.
Yes. I entered NYC in box 20 and it still not accepting it
