2024 W2 line 17 is not the same as Form OR-40 line 32

Per title, I got a significate different refund from Oregon State compare to what TurboTax calculated.

They indicated my form - OR 40 line 32 is not what is on my W2 line 17.

I call TurboTax and one of the Product Expert helped me out and did see the W2 has the correct amount, but somewhere down the line, the form OR 40 was reporting a different amount.

Is this a known software issue?

This is not a known issue at this time.  I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

This number comes from your $11,210 withholdings that you entered on your W-2 and then you entered $4,838 in Other state tax withholdings on your 1099-INT box 17.  On this form you had interest income of $128.80.  This totaled the $16,048 that TurboTax entered on your form 40 line 32.

So, this is either an error on the 1099-INT, or an entry error or a form that Oregon did not receive that they should have.  However, it does not make a lot of sense that you would have that much taxes withheld on a form with that little interest.

Hello @Vanessa A ,

Thank you for the prompt response, so what does this mean then? Did Oregon State refund me correctly or incorrectly?

They changed my form line 32 like you said, from $16,048 to $11,210. And significantly reduce the amount of tax refund. Are you saying I should contact them and appeal? Or are you saying they did it right to correct me?

You need to locate the form 1099-INT that you had for 2024 that showed $128.80 in interest on it.  In box 17 of that form the system shows $4,838.  That is almost certainly incorrect.  So either there was an error when the form was imported into TurboTax or an accidental error when you typed it in.  But in your case the Oregon taxing authority says that they didn't get that money.

You need to pull out that form and check that box.  If there is an amount there then you need to send a copy of that form to Oregon.  If there is no amount in box 17 then they corrected your return to the proper amount.

Hello @RobertB4444 ,

The $4838 is Real Estate Taxes, form 1098, under box 10, not 17.

The $128.80 is Interest Income, form 1099 INT, under box 1.

With that being said, it sounds like the Oregon State did it right to correct me?

It does.  The real estate taxes would get you a credit if you itemized deductions but that isn't likely.  So Oregon fixed it for you.
