If you have already filed your tax return, you will not be able to include your Form 1099-G from Ohio. You may need to amend your tax return if you are required to report your state refund. First, you must wait until your return is either accepted or rejected by the IRS. Please see the steps below once you know the status of your return.
Your 2018 state refund may not be taxable on your 2019 tax return. If you claimed the standard deduction on your 2018 tax return, you would not have to include your state refund in your taxable income for 2019. If you itemized in 2018 (instead of taking the standard deduction), then a portion of your state refund may be taxable. Please review your 2018 tax return to determine if you claimed the standard deduction or itemized your deductions.
If you are required to report your state refund on your 2019 tax return and your return is accepted, you will need to amend your tax return to include this information. You will be able to amend your return starting 02/27/2020. Once this option is available, please follow these steps:
If your return is rejected, you will need to fix the e-file error and then you will be able to add the state refund to your return before re-filing it.
