I have received two 1099-R's from the same pension association. One is for volunteer work the other is for paid work. Should I treat them as one and add together?

The paid 1099-R is because I retired on 1/1/18.

You should report each 1099-R separately. The IRS receives copies of all forms and they will perform a comparability check. If it seems that a 1099-R has not been entered they will send you a letter requesting additional information.
