Why so much more tax for 2016: here are the core figures: 2016/2015 Taxable Income 91,940 / 85,183 Total Tax 13,274/ 11,430 ?

Difference in income from 2015 to 2016 was $6,757.00.  Difference in total tax was $1,844.00.  With only a $200.00 difference in child credits, that's still  a difference of $1,644.00.

Well, it appears you are in the 25% marginal tax bracket, meaning that every dollar of additional income (wage income in particular) adds another $0.25 to your taxes.  $6,757 additional taxable income times 25% is $1,689 more tax - very close to what you indicate, and if your taxes are calculated using the tax tables, there are discrete jumps so it won';t work out to exactly 25%.
