Was the 1099G for unemployment?
If you think the 1099G that was issued to you by your state is wrong you need to sort that out with the state's unemployment office. Whatever is on the 1099G you received is the amount that the state sent to the IRS so you cannot just change it because you think it is wrong.
Or was it for a state tax refund? If so, and you had part of it applied against the following year's estimated taxes; the gross refund is still taxable.
IRS says:
If your 1099-G for unemployment is wrong, report the correct amount on your form 1040 tax return.
Absolutely correct. In my state, the unemployment department also requests that people who received a 1099-G for too much or for benefits they never received go to the department Web site and report it. I've done this for several of my less computer-savvy clients and friends.
