Tax Year Prior to 2020: Out of state retirement income

I live in North Carolina but get a retirement check monthly from the state of Alabama where I worked as a teacher before moving here.

If there are no Alabama state taxes withheld and it's reported to North Carolina, then you don't need to file an Alabama tax return. Otherwise, you will file as a Non-Resident of Alabama and a Resident of North Carolina.
