should like 5a include non-taxable pension income? the last several years it has been shown there but turbotax didn't include it on line 5A for 2024

the 1099R was correctly input (i just ran through it again). the correct taxable amount was included on 1h, not 5b like usual. just confused as to why the difference.

1040 line 1h for other earned income?  What code is in 1099R box 7?  How old are you?  Are you getting a disability pension?  If you are under retirement age it will add it to wages instead of pension.

You mentioned that that there is an amount on Line 1h of the Form 1040.  That could be because this was a Disability pension shown on Form 1099-R if you haven’t reached the minimum retirement age set by your
employer.  That would have a code of 3 in box 7.

If this is not a disability pension -

On Form 1040, Line 5a should show the same amount as is on the Form 1099-R box 1 if the amount in box 2a is different than box 1.  The amount from box 2a on the 1099-R should flow to the Form 1040 Line 5b.

It’s definitely not taxable income. We’ve had the same thing for the last 12 years. Every other year the total amt was in 5a and taxable amount (a tiny portion of it that’s been the same for the duration) went into 5b. I’m just confused why the program would not put it in the same lines as the previous years. The code on line 7 on thr 1099r is ‘3’. It’s nypd disability retirement that is non-taxable (except that tiny Amt). Just can’t figure out why it went in diff line than all the previous years and now have to figure out if I should do an amended return. It shouldn’t make a diff in the overall taxable income or tax liability.

What was the code in box 7 the prior years?   Ask the plan why they changed it to 3.  Should it have been a 3 before?   By putting it in 1h the same amount should be taxable but it will also qualify you for some credits based on earned income.

Just checked back to 2020 and box 7 has always been 3. Since it won’t affect the overall tax assessment I shouldn’t be worried about it but I work for the IRS (not in exam obviously otherwise I’d know the answers to this 🙂 so I just don’t want to get screwed because of a mistake. I appreciate you taking the time to answer.
