My mom is over 65. income is $18,000 but $9,000 is social security. Does she need to file?
Don't think she needs to file since her gross income is under the $13,000 (when you take out the social security) as a single over 65 but Turbo Tax also doesn't say "good news, you may not need to file since you …." So wanted to confirm

She does not need to file unless her gross income is over $$13,600 (not counting her social security income) or if she has had tax withheld that she would like to get back or your state requires it.
You can go to her state tax website and check the requirements for filing for her state.
