Won’t accept my payer when inputting 1099 R info. Why not?

Did you get an error code or message when inputting your Form 1099-R? Or was the e-file or your return rejected?

  • The error could be as simple as a missing or mistyped letter or number. A payer’s EIN number has 9 digits with the format: 99-9999999.
  • Your 1099-R form is incorrect or is missing information.
  • The payer’s 1099-R form was imported into TurboTax resulting in an undetected error.

If it is not letting you enter the payer name while you are entering the Form 1099-R, try deleting the Form 1099-R and re-enter it.  Make sure that the EIN number matches what is on your Form 1099-R. If you imported this Form 1099-R, try entering it manually.

Use these steps to delete your Form 1099-R:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link

This will take you to the Form 1099-R summary page.  Click Delete or the trash can icon next to the one you need to remove.

Here's how to re-enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. In the Federal section, select Wages & Income.
  3. Scroll to locate Retirement Plans and Social Security.
  4. Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).

You can also find the 1099-R section using Search. Open your return, enter 1099-r in the search bar, and select the Jump to 1099-r link.

If you got a reject error when filing your return:

E-file reject code F1099R-502-02 happens when the employer’s name or federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) that you entered from your 1099-R form doesn't match the IRS database.

The error could be as simple as a missing or mistyped letter or number. A payer’s EIN number has 9 digits with the format: 99-9999999.

Other, less common reasons for this rejection include:

  • The payer's information in the IRS database is wrong.
  • Your 1099-R form is incorrect or is missing information.
  • No EIN number? Most likely this is from a foreign payer and they will not have an EIN. In this case the return will need to be mailed.
  • The payer’s 1099-R form was imported into TurboTax resulting in an undetected error.
