You must allocate the income on a part-year resident return based on the type of income and the amount spent in each state. Please follow the directions in this TurboTax FAQ to properly allocate your income payments.
On that question, it had $716 (this coincides with box 17, 'State Income Tax').
We left this blank and in the end return it said we paid $716 as our "non-resident" payment (we didn't make any non-resident payments, so that is incorrect).
Since we are NJ residents and we had the $716 withheld while we were in NJ, we just put 716 in the box next to it showing that all of the state taxes withheld were while we were in NJ as residents (we just made the box match). Not sure why this isn't automated; there should definitely be more clarification on this question somewhere. My tax filings have been 2 hrs and 32 minutes (and I think I spent about 2 hours on this question).
Cheers! And hope that helps some.
