W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

If you live in a state that lets you deduct job-related expenses, the information will flow from your federal return  to the state return, so enter it in Federal>Deductions and Credits>Employment Expenses>Job-Related Expenses

I entered the job-related expenses but it did not change my state tax refund. I live in one of those states you mentioned that might have deduction. how this happens?

@2Double Can you please clarify which state you live in so we can assist you further?  For example, PA offers certain unreimbursed employer expenses to be deducted, but home internet for hybrid workers does not meet their requirements.  The states have different rules.

I think the reason was that the expenses were relatively low making the standard still better than itemized deduction. thanks
