For 2021 and beyond, Form 8915-E will be replaced by the new Form 8915-F which will be needed to report repayments of Coronavirus Related Distributions. Form 8915-F is currently scheduled for release on 03/31/2022.
If you did not spread the distribution over 3 years but instead paid all the taxes on the 2020 return then you don't have to wait for the 8915-F at all. Federal taxes paid on the 2020 return in 2021 is not a deduction on the federal 2021 return at all ... but a couple of states have a deduction for it ... if yours does it will be in the state interview watch for it there. 2020 State taxes paid on the 2020 return are a federal deduction only if you itemize deductions and are entered in the federal OTHER TAXES section if the program did not transfer them automatically.
Good point. If all of the income was included on your 2020 tax return and you repay some or all of the distribution, you'll need to amend your 2020 tax return with an amended Form 8915-E to claim a refund. You can't use 2021 Form 8915-F to obtain this refund.
