I did a backdoor Roth conversion that is showing as not being taxable as Federal and NY state, but is being taxed in NYC. Do anyone know how to fix it?

It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue. You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Online:

  1. From the left menu select Tax Tools.
  2. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  3. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  4. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  5. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  6. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

Token number 945721

Please see line 9 (column B) of Form IT 360-1. It is incorrectly showing the backdoor conversion as a taxable income for NYC purposes.

I looked at your token number but the file didn't contain any NY return, can you please verify your token number. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your token number.

After taking a closer look at the issue and trying to determine the source of the problem, I was unable to get it to change by manipulating the inputs to either the Federal or New York returns.

However, If the New York return was deleted and started over from scratch, the IRA distribution converted to a Roth IRA was not taxed by New York City.

If you are using TurboTax Online and you have not yet paid for the return, you can delete the state return and start it over by going to the State section and clicking Delete beside New York.

If you are using one of the CD/downloaded versions of TurboTax, you can delete the state return and start it over by going to File > Remove State Return from the menu choices in the upper left section of the screen.

I did a backdoor Roth conversion that is showing as not being taxable as Federal, but as a taxable event in MA. This is an issue in the tool, since this back-door in not taxed in MA. Could you please help me, similarly to what you did last year when the tool was showing the same issue?

Try deleting your New York State Return and start over.  This may clear up the problem.
