I contributed to my IRA/401K in both VA (not taxed) and NJ (taxed). I know the years, but not amounts. How do I calculate the amount already taxed in NJ for VA taxes?

I am using retirement income this year and would like to use the credits that Virginia offers on state taxes for the amount I've already paid when I lived in NJ.

I think what you mean is that your made state non-deductible contributions to New Jersey for your pension plan. Now, you need to know what those contributions were. Since you know the years involved, you may be able to request the contribution amounts from your plan provider. Otherwise, you would have to find your tax returns for those years to see what your contributions were.

No, not my pension plan - didn't have one - MY IRA which has been converted to a 401K after I took early retirement.  I cannot go back to my "provider" - even before I I flipped everything into a to an IRA at a financial services firm I had changed employers (who used different sources for their401Ks) and they do not have records.

I am asking if there is an acceptable calculation to determine IRA contributions (which I have always maxed) based of years of employ in different states.
