He can use the Free Edition.  Just set up an account for him.  Pick the Free Edition here,  https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/

Online is only good for 1 return per account.  But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.   How to start another return in the Online version

Or There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state.  And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE,  etc.

To qualify for the Free File website  you just need to meet one of these 3 things.

AGI $36,000 or less.

Active duty military with AGI of $69,000 or less

OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)

In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website.  Click on the Orange button I Qualify, Let's get Started

Oh by the way, there is no more 1040EZ or 1040A short form.  Everyone uses the new 1040.

Did he get a W2 or a 1099Misc for it?  If he got a W2 he doesn't have to file except to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 and 17.

Be sure on their return they check the box that says they can be claimed on someone else’s return.

Sorry, my actual question got cut off. What’s the best free tax service to e-file my 16 y.o. Fed and state taxes?

You can file his return for free with TurboTax since his income is so low.

Just for your information, there is no 1040EZ form since the new tax law took effect in 2018.

Link to file free with TurboTax.
