I posted the original post in early December, but another thread was started a few weeks later and an answer was found. TT hasn't fixed the program as yet, but there is a work-around to enter SS data and Property tax data by deleting the supporting details and/or the proper form.
I guess I should have updated this thread ...
The new thread is here:
Save your tax return. Close the TurboTax program.
If you are using the TurboTax desktop program for Windows, right click on the TurboTax icon. Click on Run as Administrator
Start the TurboTax program
To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button
Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099
I tried all of that and no joy, it just keeps circling back to the "choose what I'll work on" page.
Though I tried and can access and enter data on the SS worksheet in the Forms, I can't enter the step-by-step area to properly answer the questions. After I enter some data, then the only step-by-step question that is asked is whether I am living one of the listed countries.
I'll probably just wait until the next update ... or possibly reload the program if no others are having the same problem. Yeah, it's probably early for all the 2024 modules to be worked out. I still have to work on other not-ready modules anyway.
@tomfive Entering Social Security benefits is active in the step-by-step interview for tax year 2024 using the desktop editions.
Are you using one the 2024 desktop editions for Windows? If so, then save your tax return and then close the TurboTax program.
Right click on the TurboTax icon
Click on Run as Administrator
Start the TurboTax program again and access the Social Security benefits section to see if the problem persists.
Yes, I am running the 2024 desktop edition for Windows Deluxe + State, downloaded and activated last week. Module: WinPerRelease, Version 024.000.0227. TurboTax.exe version 2024.47.8.12.
I did see a couple of updates upon starting the program, last one was a few days ago, last program update 12/5/2024.
I did the "Run as Administrator" and there was no change in its action. Click on Update SS in the "Your 2024 Income Summary" page, a couple of "Please Wait" flashes, then back on the "Your 2024 Income Summary" page. My TT Deluxe desktop edition for 2023 worked and is still working fine.
PROBLEM "SOLVED"
From an earlier reply that the Social Security entry "module" was working in TT 2024, I tried starting another return WITHOUT importing my 2023 information. And guess what ... the Social Security entry worked!. So there is something going on with my 2023 import.
Next I will try another import into a new return, and see if that is any different. Otherwise, I'll just continue without importing. A bit inconvenient without the 2023/2024 comparison right there in front of me, and a few other things carried over, but it is what it is.
This is a major inconvenience not being able to import last years data. I have 1099-SSA data to enter. I also have a similar problem in being able to enter property tax if I import last years return. Any hope of a program fix???

Thanks - I was able to enter the numbers directly on the Social Security in FORMS
I am using 2024 TurboTax (TT) Premier on a MacBook Sequoia, OS 15.3.1, and having the same problem of not being able to gain access to the SSA-1099 inputs. TT just sends me back to original SSA-1099, input page. After my last restart I now have a totally bogus $32,000 entry for my 2024 SSA-1099 and next step asks if I work/worked overseas ? After answering either Y or N I am exited back to original input page. The rest of the 2024 TT Premier seems to work although I found that after selecting a specific Dividend statement for auto download TT downloaded and input 6 copies of that Div statement, although that might have been on broker's end. I have used TT Premier on Mac systems for last 5 years and never had a single problems. Any hints would be appreciated. I have spent 6+ hours trying various fixes with no solution.
I had to go to Tax Forms and type it in directly on the form. My last years entry had a pop-up calculation box and I don't know if that's what messed it up.
I started this thread, but another thread started a few weeks later and we found a solution there. Go to the beginning of this thread and see the "Best Solution" for the link. There is a bit more discussion there. I run my TT in Windows, and I am thinking that the MAC version has the same problem, worth a try.
Basically, if you delete the SS form in the FORMS area, then go back to Step-by-Step and reenter the SS entry, things should be better. (a new SS form will be generated).
I followed the lead of many respondees to this question:
1 Open TurbTax;
2 Go to the 'Forms' tab and select, and when it opens select the "SS" form;
3 When the SS (social security) form for 2024 opens fill in the proper numbers for 2024;
4 Close 'Forms' , and your TurboTax 2024 will contain the proper entries
The answer above you indicates a different method. Go to Forms and delete the SS forms.
Go to step by step and enter your social security through the program.
I was successful going through the program in step by step.
