What was the trick to get it to work with two W2s with the same EIN? I'm having the same problem with Justworks, I split up the W2s based on paystub amounts as well but Turbotax still tells me to reclaim it from the employer because I used the same EIN for both of the W2s.
you have to use the desktop version of the software which lets you enter two W2s, even if it's the same EIN.
@cactus123 I was using the desktop version and entered a W2 for each employment (based on final payslips) with the same EIN but in the 'Employer Name Line 2' box I included 'PEO for employer name' to distinguish between the two. I was then able to manually enter the excess SS on line 11/schedule 3 although I recall this took a bit of effort. I think I may have had to do it on the 1040/1040SR Wks page and enter it in Part II, Line A (the box just above line 11).
Everything seemed to be processed without issue and the refund was received approx 3 weeks after submission.
Thanks, that worked for me too.
In case anyone else comes across this thread - I switched to the desktop version (which was actually slightly cheaper for Premier than the plan I was going to pay for online, and the ability to see all the forms directly to double check stuff is very helpful, so this is just better overall. You can transfer the return you started on the web to desktop in 1 click.) Then I could edit 1040 Section 3 Line 11 to add the overpaid social security taxes. During the review step Turbotax surfaced an error though that you can't set this line if you have only a single W2.
So I also split up my W2 into 2 using my paystubs and making sure the combined amounts came out the same as my real W2, and in box 3 for both of them I appended "PEO for <COMPANY>". Now all the Turbotax checks pass, it estimates a low chance of audit, and it's still letting me file online. So fingers crossed that my return actually gets accepted but this seems to be the way to handle this situation.
Thank god for this thread, it's crazy that Turbotax has just been handling this wrong for at least the last 5 years.
