Is my Minnesota Frontline Worker Bonus federally taxable? We never receive a form since this was $300.00. Where is this entered in Turbo Tax for Federal?

Yes, it is the correct way to report if you received a 1099 MiSC. I did some addtional research and this type of income is not subject to FICA taxes because it is classified as other income.  I read this on this Minnesota State website. This is accomplished by stating that you did not have an intent to earn money when that question is asked.

Tif you did not receive a 1099 MiSC, report it as other income. by doing the following.

  1. Go to federal>income and expenses>all income>>show more
  2. Less Common Income> Start
  3. Miscellaneous Income,>start
  4. Other reportable income>start
  5. Next screen asks Any Other Taxable Income>yes
  6. The next screen will allow you to report the income with a brief explanation.
  7. Call it Minnesota front line worker pay and then list the amount.

When you enter, it is in the Income section for:
Less Common Income
Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list and use Other reportable income

If you enter it in Other reportable income, it will not require an EIN.

Thank you.   I reported under  Other reportable income (found under Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C.) When I tried filing taxes it requested to mail in or correct on line.  See below?   Is this correct?

Is my Minnesota Frontline Worker Bonus federally taxable? We never receive a form since this was $300.00. Where is this entered in Turbo Tax for Federal?

Actually, there is a much better way to report this. Here is how to report.

  1. Log into Turbo Tax
  2. Go to federal>wages and income.
  3. Go to 1099 MISC and Other Common Income>
  4. income from 1099 MISC
  5. Enter the 1099 MISC information
  6. Once the entries are made, the program will ask questions regarding the nature of the 1099 Misc.
  7. There are questions asked  if this is like your main job and did you have the intent to earn money? if you answer yes to one or both of these questions, then you will be taxed for your share of FICA taxes as well normal federal taxation for the income.
  8. On the question on if your intent was to make money, you must ask yourself did you expect to make money from this or did you do this as a public service
  9. if you intended to make money from this activity, you may claim certain expenses against the income but would need to upgrade to Turbo Tax Self-Employed to claim the self-employed expenses. The expenses though would help reduce your taxable income thus your federal and FICA taxes are reduced also.
  10. if you do not wish to claim expenses against your income, you can stay in the Turbo Tax Deluxe version.
