it depends. Social security benefits include monthly retirement, survivor and disability benefits. They do not include supplemental security income (SSI) payments, which are not taxable. SSDI is potentially taxable, coming under the same set of tax rules as Social Security retirement family, and survivor benefits. If you are receving SSDI, it would be listed in on your SSA-Form 1099 in the box titled DESCRIPTION OF AMOUNT IN BOX 3.
