I took my 2017 RMD from Vanguard and made federal and state tax payments from the distribution. Do I include these payments as estmated payments ?

It depends on what "made federal and state tax payments" means.

If you had Vanguard withhold taxes at the time of the distribution, that withholding will be shown in box 4 (federal) and box 12 (state) of your 1099-R. When you enter the 1099-R, TurboTax will put the withholding on line 17 of form 1040 (2019 version) added to any other withholding you have (e.g. W-2).

If you sent in estimated taxes, separately, then yes enter as estimates

Thank you for your help.  It is much appreciated!  I am also having trouble entering another 1099-R for the RMD.  Can you help with this?  Also should the amount of the distribution (RMD) be entered into income?  If so, where would that be entered?   Thank you in advance.

Enter each 1099R separately.

The easiest way to get to the 1099-R entry screen is to simply search for 1099-R (upper- or lower-case, with or without the dash) in your TurboTax program and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results.

Enter a 1099R under

Federal Taxes on the left side

Wages & Income at the top

Then scroll way down to Retirement Plans and Social Security,

Then IRA, 401(k), Pension Plans (1099R) - click Start or Revisit

If you are filing a Joint return be sure to pick which person it is for.

I am trying this now.  Thanks much!
