I keep entering '0' for my Charitable Contributions but it saves as 9. Form 1040 has an error b/c I can't enter '0' for 10b, as the box b/t 10a and 10b has a 9 in it. ???

Is there somewhere else I need to check for having entered a donation as '9'? Or is this an error with the website? I've saved '0' and '0.' on the Charitable Contributions page so many times and each time I go back to double check, it says '9.' again.

Possibly there is a charitable deduction flowing from another source form.  If you entered a Sch K-1 from a partnership or Sub Chapter S Corporation, there is a line for charitable contributions that could be flowing from the input of those forms.

If you did not input either of those forms, then it may be coming from the Charitable Contributions question near the end Deductions and Credit screens in TurboTax.

Starting in 2020, those who take the standard deduction can take a charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made in 2020 to qualified charitable organizations.  There is a separate input screen after you have been determined to use the standard deduction to enter your cash contributions for 2020.  I would continue through the Deductions and Credit screens to the end to find this direct entry of Charitable Contributions to insure there is no entry.

Click HERE for more information on this deduction.

Hi, thanks for your response. I don't have a partnership or corporation so charitable contributions from those sources should not apply to me.

I believe the issue is from the page shown in this screenshot:charity.PNG

I keep changing the highlighted box to say '0' but when I revisit the page, it says 9 again.  As an experiment, I changed the number to '20' and now '20' is now shown on box 10b on my 1040, as well as the box between 10a and 10b. So then I went back to the charitable contributions screen again and changed it from '20' to '0', and I'm having the same error with my 1040 displaying a 9 in the boxes mentioned previously.

Is 0 not a valid option here? As a developer, it sounds like an issue with the server not accepting a 0 value and changing it to 9 for whatever reason.

By the way, if I enter '1' as the value, then there's no longer an issue that requires my review and correction on the 1040. I'd rather submit my tax return with all information correct to my knowledge, though.

Check the Donations section.

  • Type donations in Search in the upper right,
  • Click jump to Donations,
  • Delete any donations in the screen Review Your Donations.

If that doesn’t work:

  • Go to Tax Tools on the left column.
  • Click Tools,
  • Click Delete a Form in the center,
  • Look for Charitable Organization in the forms list and Delete.

The second solution worked. Thank you.

Yeah the second option worked for me as well. I guess we just have to delete the Charitable Donation forms even though I never selected that I donated anything.
