Your ability to Efile does not depend in having W-2 wages.
Did you get a specific error message?
Do you have some form of taxable income?
If you do not have any form of taxable income on your tax return, the IRS E-file system may reject your return. This is because it will read it as an empty tax return. Some people are not required to file returns but choose to file so they have a tax return on record for personal and/or legal reasons.
If this is the case and you still want to file a tax return you can use this workaround.
To do that in TurboTax:
- Select Federal on the left side menu.
- Select Wages and Income toward the upper left.
- Scroll down, or expand the list and find Interest and Dividends.
- Expand that section and find Interest on 1099-INT.
- Click on Start to the right.
- Answer the first question Yes.
- Click Continue.
- Click on Change how I enter my form in the lower right corner.
- Select Type it in myself.
- Fill in the first box with your banks name or "Interest".
- Put 1 in box 1
- Click Continue.
- Select None of these apply, and click Continue.
- Select Federal Review in the upper right corner.
- Keep going until you submit your e-file.
