How do I get an extension if I still don’t have my social security 1099

Social Security mailed out SSA1099 in January.  If you cannot find yours:

GET SSA1099

https://www.ssa.gov/faqs/en/questions/KA-01723.html

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

If Social Security was your ONLY income you are not required to file a tax return unless you have a 1095A for marketplace health insurance.   If you had some other forms of income then you may still need to file.

Who has to file?

How do I get an extension if I still don’t have my social security 1099

You can get a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S Benefit Statement for any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid by:

  • Signing in to your personal my Social Security account and selecting the "Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S" link. Go to the "Choose a year" dropdown menu. Choose the desired year and select the "Download" link. The most recent tax year's SSA-1099/SSA-1042S will be available beginning every February 1. You can instantly view, print, or save your Benefit Statement. If you don't have an account, you can create one at ssa.gov/myaccount.
  • Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 7:00 pm.
  • Contacting your local Social Security office.

If you live outside of the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, you can create a my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account, please contact your nearest Federal Benefits Unit.

An extension gives you until October 15, 2025 to file your taxes instead of the tax deadline of April 15, 2025. You must file an extension by April 15, 2025 to get extra time to file your taxes without a penalty. There's no further extension past October 15, 2025.

An extension does not give you extra time to pay your taxes, which are due on April 15, 2025. Even if you can't pay your taxes by the deadline, file an extension anyway so you can avoid the late-filing penalty.

You can file your extension at our Easy Extension website, or select your situation for detailed steps.

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. Select File an extension in the menu or go to extension.
    • You can also select Tax Tools then Tools from the menu and choose File an extension.
  3. Follow the instructions to e-file your extension. Note: You can't file an extension after April 15, 2025.
