How do a enter a 1099-R from 2020 for CaresAct distribution that is split for 3 years?

System is telling me to add a 1099-R but I did not get one for 2021. Do I just add the one for 2020 again?

No, you would not enter a 1099-R as you don't have one for 2021. As you begin the section for reporting year two, you will be asked if you have a 1099-R. Answer no. You will still be directed to the screen where you enter your repayment.

How do a enter a 1099-R from 2020 for CaresAct distribution that is split for 3 years?

Why is turbo tax asking to revisit 1099R section after adding the information for form 8915E? The1099R form is from 2020, currently filing for year 2021, thanks

You will need to amend your 2020 return to report the 2020 1099R. That will generate the Schedule 8915-E into 2020 and then the information will transfer into your 2021 return, where you will declare 1/3 of the distribution and generate a 8915-F.

To amend 2020 if in Turbo Tax Online;

  1. Sign in to TurboTax
  2. Scroll down to under Your tax returns & documents,
  3. Select Amend (change) 2020 return
  4. Then Start amending my 2020 return
  5. Then, select the reason you’re amending and follow the onscreen instructions.
  6. Once you are in your return, go to:
  • income and expenses>Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  • From here follow the on screen instructions carefully and then you will enter the information relating to the coronavirus disaster and once finished, you have deferred your income that is reported on a 8915-E.

How do a enter a 1099-R from 2020 for CaresAct distribution that is split for 3 years?

I think she’s asking because I have same problem! I’ve gone through answered all the questions and gone through the 8515-e that shows the third payment BUT at the end it still says to REVISIT the section 🤦🏼‍♀️Been doing this for three days and keep getting same thing to keep revisiting it!
at one point I did manually input the 2020 1099-r in and my amount due actually went down from owing $1549 to only $51 🤣almost hit submit! But I don’t wanna get audited so I wanna do it right! ***so what you’re saying is “” DO NOT REENTER THE OLD 1099-R”? Just answer the questions and even though it keeps saying to revisit to just ignore it and move on ? That’s my problem! I don’t wanna pay the MAX if I don’t need it

Follow the instructions in this procedure.  If you did not receive a 2021 Form 1099-R then do not enter a Form 1099-R in the TurboTax program.  If there is a Form 1099-R listed on the screen Your 1099-R Entries and you did not enter a form, then delete the form listed.

You must go to the Retirement Income section of the program for a Form 1099-R to be able to enter your 2nd year of the 2020 distribution -

Click on Federal

Click on Wages & Income

Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click on the Start or Revisit button

On the screen Did you get a 1099-R in 2021? Click on NO, if you did not receive a 2021 Form 1099-R in 2022

Answer Yes when asked Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?

Answer Yes when asked if you took a Qualified 2020 Disaster Distribution

Check the box that this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020

In the box 2020 Form 8915-E, line 4, column b - Leave blank or enter a 0

This is not required on a Form 8915-F for a Coronavirus-related distribution

If the 2020 distribution was from an account that was Not an IRA

Enter 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution in both boxes for Line 9

2020 Form 8915E, line 9, if you checked the box on that line, enter 0

2020 Form 8915E Line 9

If the 2020 distribution was from an IRA account

Enter 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution in both boxes for Line 17

2020 Form 8915E, line 17, if you checked the box on that line, enter 0

2020 Form 8915E Line 17

Do not enter anything in the other boxes, leave them blank (empty) or enter a 0

The 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution will be entered on the 2021 Form 1040 Line 4b if from an IRA or on Line 5b if from a retirement plan other than an IRA

After completing the Wages & Income section you will land on a screen Did you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 and 2020?

Answer NO since you have already completed the entering the 1/3 of the 2020 distribution.

You can view your Form 1040 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

Using the desktop editions click on Forms.  Open the Form 1040

You should not receive the "Needs Review" in the Federal Review section if -

You Leave blank or enter a 0 in the box for 2020 Form 8915-E, line 4, column b
