Distribution code on 1099-R is two digits (number and letter) but TT does not allow more than one digit entry. Please advise how to proceed.

Try entering just one of them and see if another entry box appears where you can enter the other.

Correct, that is actually two separate single-character codes that need to be entered separately.

.......so a code that appears (say) as 7D, is really just a 7 and a D.....to be entered in two separate boxes for box 7 in the software.
