For tax year 2022, many taxpayers may see smaller refunds because the Child Tax Credit reverts back to the benefits available prior to the American Rescue Plan as follows:

  • Reverts back to up to $2,000 for 2022 – 2025
  • Each dependent child must be under age 17 (for the Child Tax Credit; they may still qualify as Other Dependents for a smaller credit)
  • Refundable up to $1,400, but no longer fully refundable (that is, you would need to have tax owed against which to apply the credit)
  • Advance payments were not issued for tax year 2022
  • The credit is available if you earn up to $200,000 as a single taxpayer or head of household (or up to $400,000 if you are a married couple filing jointly)

You mentioned that you are retired.  For tax year 2022, if you did not have income earned from working you are not eligible to receive the refundable additional child tax credit.  That was available for 2021 only, but the tax law changed.   The ACTC is based on earned income, as is earned income credit.
