If you are currently working on your return, to enter your 1099-R, please complete the following steps below:
- Sign in to TurboTax (if you're not already signed in)
- Click on the Take me to my Return button
- Click on Federal Taxes tab
- Click on Wages and Income tab
- Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
- Click on the Start/Update button next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) and follow the Interview questions.
If you are currently working on your return and need to add another 1099-R, please follow these steps:
- Sign in to TurboTax (if you're not already signed in)
- Click on the Take me to my Return button
- Click on Federal Taxes tab
- Click on Wages and Income tab
- Click on Edit/Add (next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
- Click on Add Another 1099-R and follow the Interview questions.
If you have already e-filed or mailed the return, then you will need to wait until the IRS has accepted or rejected that return before you can make any changes.
- If they reject it, then just make the needed changes (add 1099-R) and re-submit the return.
- If they accept it, then you will need to wait until you have received your refund and then amend that return to make changes (add 1099-R). You will need to send in any forms that caused the need for an amendment (Original 1040 Form, new 1040X Form and 1099-R). Print, sign and mail your forms to the IRS.
