1099-R box 10 and 11, and the worksheet

In my 1099-R that I received from my broker, there are no boxes 10 and 11

So when I filled whatever I had and completed my return. When I reviewed the final prepared file , I noticed that on the IRA information worksheet part 5, line 22, it said NO to the question "Opened Roth IRA before 2015".

But this is not true, I had opened it in 2012. Then I saw that in the 1099-R the program prepared , there are also boxes 10 and 11.  When I wrote 2012 to the box 11, the line 22 i talked about above became yes. But I want to make sure nothing is wrong here because my original broker 1099-R doesnt have boxes 10 and 11.

Do these worksheets or 1099-R get sent to IRS? because if i dont write anything as in my original 1099-R, then line 22 becomes NO. It only becomes yes if I write 2012 to box 11 which i dont even have in my 1099-R

Worksheets are not sent to the IRS.  The 1099-R box 10 & 11 only pertain to designated Roth distributions whe  the box 7 code is B or H.

The worksheet Roth question comes for the 1099-R interview for a Roth distribution determined by the box 7 code.

Do not try to do this in the forms mode since that is not supported and voids the TurboTax accuracy guarantee.  Unless you know the relationship between forms that the interview mode automatically takes care of then you should stick to the interview mode.

1099-R box 10 and 11, and the worksheet

but when i did it in interview it never asked me when I opened my roth and then it produced a "NO" on line 22 of part V of "IRA information worksheet". But I opened it in 2012. My box 7 is J. I contributed 18400 totally after opening in 2012 for sevelral years. I withdrew 5000 in 2019 first time.

So then what will happen to that "NO" there? how else can I correct it? or it doesnt matter?

and even after i entered 2012, which i will delete now, it asked interview questions again from beginning

There is two part to the interview.   When you get to the 1099-R summary screen (where you can enter another 1099-R) select [Continue] and keep going and you will get this screen:

(delete the 1099-R and re-enter)

You can always withdraw your own Roth contributions tax and penalty free.

Enter a 1099-R here:

Federal Taxes,
Wages & Income
I’ll choose what I work on (if that screen comes up),
Retirement Plans & Social Security,
IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).

OR Use the "Tools" menu (if online version under My Account) and then "Search Topics" for "1099-R" which will take you to the same place.

Be sure to choose which spouse the 1099-R is for if this is a joint tax return.
Be sure to pick the correct 1099-R type: Standard 1099-R, CSA-1099-R, CSF-1099-R, RRB-1099-R.

[NOTE: When you get to the "Your 1099-R Entries" screen where you can add another 1099-R, use "continue" to keep going as there are additional interview questions after that screen in most cases. You can always return as shown above.]

One of the followup questions will ask for your prior year** contributions not previously withdrawn. Those contributions that still remain in the Roth will not be taxed or subject to a early withdrawal penalty. That will add a 8606 form to your tax return with the Roth contribution and tax calculation in part III.

Note: **Prior year - any current year Roth contributions should be entered into the IRA contributions section. They will not show up in the prior years contributions but will be accounted for on the 8606 form that calculates the taxable amount.

Where does it say that?   I do not think I have ever seen that.

1099-R box 10 and 11, and the worksheet

huy.jpgit says it in the form 1099-R the TurboTax prepares. Look under the area of boxes 10 and 15. There are a few options there. One of them is this. Does this get sent to IRS? if so, isnt this an error?

1099-R box 10 and 11, and the worksheet

That is in the forms mode which is not supported for data input.   The verbiage has not been updated for years.   Probably something left over from many years ago.   Neither code 2 or 5 apply to a Roth IRA currently.   A Roth would have a code J in box 7 for that box to be checked.     Ignore it.

Unless there was tax withheld in box 4 then only the figures on the 1040 form line 4 gets sent to the IRS, if there is box 4 withholding then the 1040 box 1-11 (that have values) are sent to the IRS - nothing more.
