In the page just before you get that "Combat Area Served" question should be where the option to "un-select" military service is found.

If you select the "Back" button on that page and you should find it at the bottom of question 1.

The same question is asked about your spouse.

What is combat pay. I have never served

Hello, @DoninGA @DMarkM1

I have selected no in 'my info'  but the combat pay is still showing up under 'deductions & credits' when it asks 'do you want to use last year's earned income.  I have selected yes and it asks for '2019 non-taxable combat pay".  But when I select 'no' it goes away. How should I proceed?

Thank you,

Teresa M.

What is combat pay. I have never served

Literally. I’m getting frustrated because I’m trying to use my 2019 income For the EIC, it will not let me file my taxes because it keeps asking me where I served for combat pay. I HAVE NEVER SERVED. So it makes absolutely no sense. I didn’t put Any numbers on combat pay. It said to leave blank if it doesn’t apply. Which I did, yet it still pops up and asks if I’ve served 🙃???  Or where I have ? Please help me fix it this

It sounds as if something is hung in the form. If you are using TurboTax Online or the TurboTax Mobile App:

  • First, check the My Info tab at the top of the black menu bar, on the left
  • select Edit, on the right
  • Make sure the military question is a No, as below

My Info military question

  • Then click Continue, at the bottom, to be sure the information is saved.
  • Next, Sign Out of TurboTax with the link at the bottom of the black menu bar, on the left

If you are using TurboTax Online, the most likely reason for a field that won't take information, or will not behave well, is that something in the web browser is not displaying the page properly.  The easiest way around this is to simply use a different web browser.  You can select from Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and more.   If you need to install another browser, be sure to go to the trusted home site for the software, for security reasons. Or you can clear the cache and cookies in your current browser.  Click this link for a TurboTax Help Article Clear cache and cookies

If you are using the TurboTax Mobile App, then try opening TurboTax in the browser window on your phone.  It will use the same login information but may update and display the page better.

  • Please log back in and return to the Earned Income Credit section to see if it will let you leave the question about combat pay blank and still progress.

If not, you may need to delete that form entirely, and then re-enter.

Here are the directions to delete the form from your return.  This will delete both the form and the entries.  If it rebuilds, sometimes there is another form recreating it and both have to be deleted to clear that information.

  • To Delete a Form go black menu bar, on the left
  • Click on Tax Tools
  • Click on Tools
  • Under Other helpful links, click on Delete a Form
  • Scroll down and check for Earned Income Worksheet and if there is one, click on Delete
  • Click on the blue Delete Selected Form
  • At the bottom Continue
  • At the bottom Continue with my Return
  • Then return to the Earned Income Credit area and check if it is now normal.
