for 2020 and 2022 I have been audited by the IRS.  Either I am making an entry mistake or TURBO TAX is not recording retired military pay correctly.

What is wrong with it?  Didn't the right taxable amount show up on 1040 line 5b?  Or what line did it show up on?

Did not show up on line 5 at all, and is not reflected on 1099 summary.

I suggest you preview your tax return (Form 1040), and review what is posted.

Also, what was the focus of the IRS audit?

If you're using Desktop, simply go to FORMs mode and view your 1040.

If you're online, please follow these steps.

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.
    1. My Info
    2. Federal
    3. State
    4. Review
    5. File
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the popup menu
  5. Select View Tax Summary
  6. On the left sidebar
  7. Select Preview my 1040.

Line 5a - Pension

Line 5b - Taxable Pension

Line 15 - Taxable Income

Line 24 - Total Tax.

Line 25 - Withholdings.

Line 33 - Payments including Credits.

Line 34 - Overpayments.

Line 37 - Tax owed.

To return to the entry screens press Back on the sidebar.

If the pension isn't posted to 5a, can you determine where it is?

I'm sure this does not completely answer your question, please contact @JohnB5677 again and provide some additional details.

military retirement 1099-R

Military retire, ie pensions and annuities did not show on line 5 AND was not added to total income.

Review of 1099-R summary does not show it either.

This is the second year that this has happen, 2020 and 2021.  I am very careful about entering income est my military retirement.  Last year when I got my first notice from the IRS I through that I made a mistake.  But last week when I got the notice about the 2021 return I started looking into it deeper.  Both years, nothing in line 5 and 1099-R blank.

I use the on line version.

i can send you the notice from the IRS.  Was not an audit, just a notice that they received a report of income from DFAS that was not on my return.

We believe you received the notice and understand what the issue is. I'm more concerned with the posting of the 1099-R.

This is unusual, and I could not recreate it on my computer.

Please confirm that this is the document you have and that you posted it to the area shown below.

Is this the form that you have?  This is the 1099-R used to report your retirement income.

Is this the format that you posted it to?  This is the 1099-R entry screen.

What boxes do you have numbers in?

Make sure the $$ didn't show up in lines 4a and/or 4b on the form 1040 either.

Sometimes people make that mistake, and the IRS doesn't notice.

______

....but I don't see how TTX would miss it.   TTX does transfer 1099-R forms from one year to the next , but empty at first, and you do have to put $$ into them before submitting.

IF your actual DFAS form 1099-R has only empty boxes in those older tax files, then that's what they received...nothing....assuming you are looking at the file you actually submitted.  (you did efile those years?)

(check your DFAS 1099-R forms in your 2022 tax file now...make sure $$ are in there for boxes 1 and probably 2a too)
