Turbo Tax has an error. When a US citizen with a Non Resident Alien (NRA) spouse selects Married Filing Separately, Turbo Tax requests a SSN for the NRA spouse. Without it, Turbo Tax will not let you file electronically. This is different from the IRS instructions, which state:
"For electronic filing, enter the spouse's name or “NRA” if the spouse
doesn’t have an SSN or ITIN in the entry space below the filing status checkboxes."
Turbo Tax should allow a return to be filed electronically if the NRA spouse does not have an SSN. When will Turbo Tax fix this?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
No. You won't be able to electronically file the return unless your spouse has a SSN or ITIN. You would write NRA in the spouse's SSN field in the return. This is an IRS regulation and not a Turbo Tax requirement.
