Where to put rental expense

I haven't been prompted to enter the rent that I've paid, where can I go to enter this information?

Where to put rental expense

If you are asking about Rent expenses on Rental Property:

To enter this transaction in TurboTax, log into your tax return and type "rental (schedule e)" in the search bar then select "jump to rental (schedule e)", TurboTax will guide you in entering this information

Enter your rental property information through the TurboTax guided questions (or edit your rental property if it is already entered) until you come to a screen that is titled, Your "rental property name" rental summary.

Select to edit your rental expenses>I'll choose what I work on> click through several screen until you get to one tilted "any other expenses". (see screenshot) You can put the rent you pay here as "Rental Paid"

If you are asking about Rent expenses on for your business:

In TurboTax Home and Business, report it under "Business"> "Business income and expenses" > "I'll choose what I work on" > Business income and expenses.  Then enter all your business information.  You will come to a screen that has "Business Expenses", enter the rental space costs under "Other Common Business Expenses" - Rental expense

If you are asking about Rent expense for your personal apartment/home:

This is no federal income tax deduction for personal rent. However, some but not all states offer renter credits. If you state has a renter's credit, it may be under a different title then rent expenses. You will need to check with your state's Department of Revenue to determine if your state has a renter's credit and under what name would this credit be titled.

For example,

  • in Minnesota it is a Certificate of Rent Paid(CRP) - you will enter information on the screen 'Other Forms You May Need', select Property Tax Refund (M1PR)

Under the State Taxes Tab, answer all state tax questions carefully and usually if your state has a renter's credit, it is one of the last things to enter.

You can use the following links below to contact access your state's Department of Revenue but you will need to search under the individual income tax section to find if your state has some type of renter's credit:

Where to put rental expense

rent that I've paid,

Rent that you pay for your residence or other personal use property is not reported or deductible anywhere on a federal tax return. If this is a state thing for a "renter's credit" you will deal with that on your state return, when you get to that point in the program.
