You can enter the Schudule D Capital Loss Carryforward directly in your 2017 return. You just need to know the amount.

Your Capital Loss Carryforward amount from 2016, can be found on 2016 Schedule D or your Capital Loss Carryforward worksheet Line 13.  If you can't find your 2016 Capital Loss Carryforward Worksheet, you just subtract 2016 Schedule D, page 2, Line 21 from Line 16. Line 16 if your capital loss and Line 21 is the capital loss you used in 2016.  The remainder of line 16 minus line 21 is the carryforward amount.

You can enter the Schudule D Capital Loss Carryforward directly in your 2017 return this way:

Log on and start your return, then

  1. Press the TurboTax "Search" button located near the top right of your screen
  2. Type "capital loss carryover" into the TurboTax search box
  3. Select "Jump to capital loss carryover" from the dropdown list of results
  4. On the "Did You Have Investment Losses You Couldn't Claim in 2016?" screen, select "Yes" then press "Continue"
