renters certificate

T.T. is making me fill out a renters certificate for my state taxes. I do NOT rent. How do I get past this? I have never ran into this problem previous years.

There is nothing to enter about rent on your federal return, but some states give credits to renters.  Somewhere in the state program you must have clicked something about rent---accidentally----but that is why you are getting the questions.   Go back through the screens in the state program and find where you clicked something about rent.  If you tell us what state you are in, someone familiar with your state forms can be more helpful.

If you do not see the rent question in the state return, please delete the current state return and add it again, so it can pull fresh data from the federal return.  This should resolve the message

If this is TurboTax Online

  1. Go to the States section and click on the trashcan icon
  2. Confirm Delete
  3. Select Add another state button

In TurboTax Desktop

  1. Return to the federal portion of the return and on the menu bar select File
  2. Then click on Remove State Return
  3. Select the Remove button
  4. Select Yes
  5. Then return to the State section and add the state return again
