Recouping Renovations?

 I rented this home for 4 years, was going to move into this home, but due to health changes had to sell and move close to family in another state. Is there a way to recoupe the Renovation costs?

If you renovated the rental property before you sold the property you can add the cost of the renovations to the basis of your home and reduce the gain on the sale.
