Error I am getting is that the state ID doesn't match with states entered in box 15.
The box for the state ID is correct on my W2. It was imported correctly. I have an amount in box 16, a state in box 15 (CA) and box 17 shows $0. I can not e-file my taxes because TT thinks the state I entered (CA) is incorrect. I can not fix this. I can not e-file (which I am required to do). How do I fix this?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You can try using the Federal ID (EIN, Payer's ID) listed on your Form W-2 for the State ID and see if you are able to e-file.
You can also try to match the CA state ID number format using nines.
The proper format for a CA state ID is as follows: 999-9999-9.
If the TurboTax program tells you the specific format for a state ID, such as 9-digits and ending in XYZ, then enter a value that conforms to that format . . . such as 123456XYZ.
This may enable you to bypass the issue and e-file your tax return.
I ended up calling TT and spoke with someone. I shared my screen and she found that TT didn't completely import my W2 from Fidelity. TT skipped the import for boxes 15, 16 and 17. Once I corrected that, the error went away.
The box only allowed a 2 letter state designation. So CA was the correct thing to put in the box, TT just didn't recognize it. This was a TT error which I then had to correct.
Thank you!
Thank you for the update.
When documents are uploaded, it's hard to say where the error in transmitting happens, on the sender's side or receiver.
We will keep an eye to see if this occurs again and if so, if the documents are sourced by Fidelity.
