Is the subtraction of reinvested dividends only at time of sale?

I guess you could look at it that way.  When you reinvest a dividend it buys more shares so it adds to your cost when you sell it.  It is really 2 transactions,  they paid you a dividend and you pay tax on the dividend.  Then they bought more shares with it.  Just like if they had sent you a dividend check and then you sent it back to buy more shares.

I saw an article on The 10 Most Overlooked Deductions and thought maybe I could subtract something now.  I have not sold the mutual funds so it sounds like no.
