Hi I received a 1099-K from Airbnb for my rental house. I only rented it for 10 days in Dec/Jan but need to report it. Where do I enter the information?

Do I enter under self-employment, rental properties, or other common income?  there seem to be severa places that mention 1099-K.  also looking to enter the expenses

You do not need to report the income if it was rented for less than 14 days. You may want to include this to be able to deduct expenses.

The information on the 1099-K would be entered for the rental house on Schedule E for rental income. You do not enter the 1099-K, just the information that is reported on it.

If you rented the rooms for 14 days or less, you are not required to report the rental income. But you cannot deduct any related expenses, either.

Occasional Airbnb rental activity (where substantial services to guests were not provided) is generally reported on Schedule E:

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Wages & Income
  3. Rental Properties and Royalties - follow the instructions  Where do I enter income and expenses from a rental property?

Here is a TurboTax Help article for Airbnb and vrbo.

I'm just confused because since Airbnb is now required to report earnings over $600 to the IRS, then don't I have to report it no matter what?

The rule is that you don't have to report this as income if the rental was for less than 14 days. Save your records that show the number of rental days in case the IRS sends a letter asking about the money on the 1099-K.

Thanks, I just found the Minimal Rental Use rule on the IRS website.  Had no idea.

The minimal use rules are for your personal residence only not a second home or rental property ... if you got a 1099 for renting out the property then it goes on a Sch E.

Thanks for explaining.  Then I think this year it will qualify as a personal residence and the minimal use rules apply since it is my only home.  Eventually this will be a full-time rental and I will have my own house.  But right now, I'm renting and living in it.

That’s not true. One can have two homes and both be considered a “Primary” depending on days lived in each. So, if both are considered “Primary”, the 14 days rule still applies.  No need to report 1099K on your taxes.  Check the IRS link below for the formulas.

Will the 1099 that I received raise a red flag to the IRS if it is not reported even though I rented my home for 14 days or less.  I was told I need to record the amount on schedule 1 line 8z as follows

Home rental income-14 days or less     $

IRC Section 280A(G)-Nontaxable Home Rent    -$

I can not figure out how to enter that using Turbo Tax.

Use the following steps to report your rental income for less than 14 days, and report the same amount as a negative adjustment:

  • Go to the Income section of your return
  • Scroll to the Less Common Income category
  • Click Start or Update beside Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  • Scroll to the bottom of that section and click Start or Update beside Other reportable income
  • Enter your description and amount for the income you received
  • Enter your description and a negative amount for the income you received

The end result is that no additional income is reported on your return, but there are two income entries shown on Schedule 1 line 8z.
