On my state return for NJ, there is a question asking how much rent have I paid in 2024. The number here is supposed to be monthly rent or annually?

For your New Jersey state tax return, the question about how much rent you paid in 2024 is asking for the annual amount. So, you'll need to add up all the rent you paid throughout the year and enter that total.

 

If you need more details, you can refer to the NJ-1040 instructions and go to page 26.
