The 2019 1099-DIV does not have boxes 1d or 1e. However, the 1099-B does have 1d, Proceeds and 1e, Cost or Other Basis.

If you have entered any information from a 1099-B into a section in TurboTax for the 1099-DIV, I would remove it.

The 1099-B is the Proceeds From Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions form and deals with the sale of assets such as stock. You need to enter the 1099-B in its own section of TurboTax.

To enter the 1099-B into TurboTax;

  • While signed in and working in TurboTax
  • Click on Federal in the left-hand black menu
  • Click on Income and Expenses
  • Scroll down and click on Show More next to Investment Income.
  • Click on Start or Revisit next to Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other

The confusion arises because Vanguard has all the 1099 forms on a single sheet of paper.  Each quadrant on the page is a different 1099.

It is very common for a brokerage firm to provide a "Consolidated 1099" to the investor. A consolidated 1099 includes information regarding interest (Form 1099-Int), dividends (Form 1099-Div), proceeds from the sale of investments (Form 1099-B), original issue discounts (Form OID) and Rent or royalty payments (Form 1099-Misc.)

Each section of the Consolidated 1099 must be reported in a different area of your tax return. You will need to carefully look at each section to ensure you have reported all the amounts on your tax return.

TurboTax can help you determine where to enter each area. Just click on Search in the right-hand corner and then type in the form number, such as "1099-int" in the search box. TurboTax will provide a "Jump to" link to take you to the area where you would enter this information.

To enter your Form 1099-B, boxes 1d and 1e, please see the steps provided by DeanM15 in the above message.

What if the 1099-DIV has a number in 1a, but no other information past that?  there is also an amount in lines 11, 12.   When the program is checking, it now want s a 1099-B.  But there is no further information to complete that form?  What next?

go to the 1099-B section and look for an extraneous 1099-B that should not be there. If you spot one, delete it.
