Neither, unfortunately, you cannot deduct the rent you pay for an apartment on your taxes.

You could, only if you use your apartment for your trade or business.

Rent is not a deductible expense on a federal return. Where are you trying to claim this?

It is on some State returns.

Which is why I specified federal and asked where they were trying to claim it.

True for Federal, but some States allow it.
