If you only have a 1099-Q and you used the distribution to pay for education expense, you can enter the 1099-Q under
- Deductions & Credits
- Education
- ESA and 529 qualified tuition programs (Form 1099-Q)
The program will ask if it was used for education expense, if you reply "Yes" the program will tell you that it needn't be reported.
Whether you claim the student and whether you try to get an education credit, if the distribution went to Room and Board, (the rent must be the same as room and board at the school) the 1099-Q would not be reported and those expenses would not count towards a credit, so the 1099-Q, in this situation, can be ignored.
