How do I report a spinoff distribution on shares I received which have no assigned value?

I have never filed an extension before. Can I start and complete everything else on my taxes in TurboTax and then select to file for an extension?

Yes, you can complete everything else for your tax return. Then, file for an extension. You will have until October 15 to figure out the spinoff distribution value. This will not be a problem. You'll only need to add that information to your return to e-file.
