Fidelity Investment import not working.

Not just talking but finding the person or persons at Turbotax that are in charge of the interface with Fidelity.

Playing the online game, I have most of the Fidelity information.  Now, I suspect I will have to manually enter my wife's information.  Thankfully, she only has a 1099Div with just a few numbers.

The folks I worked with for close to 3 hours know there is a problem.  One of them attempted to say it was my internet connection.  With newer computers, we don't even have a way to plug in an ethernet cable.

I have no problem connecting.  I just always get the 1099B error.  The online version was able to import the same tax records.

Fidelity Investment import not working.

Per my prior post I just tried again to import into the TT online version and then download into my desktop TT. Here’s what happened.

Removed the password from a copy (just in case) of my .tax2021 file by opening it in TT desktop 2021 per these instructions. Don’t forget to hit save afterward then close TT. Just in case I also removed all spaces from the name and shortened it as per @tidf2 ‘s suggestions.

Started a new return in TT online. Selected Premier to match my desktop version. Note you won’t need to pay until you file which you won’t ever do in the online version.

Pain in the @$$ but you have to answer a bunch of questions before you get to a point where you can import from last year’s return (gray menu on the left appears, select Tools). Should ask that first to avoid entering some personal info that will be imported anyway! And it worked this time. Obviously, it was the PW protection. However, since I wasn’t being asked for a PW for my 2022 return I forgot about that. I thought it was because it was getting the PW from my keychain and also thought that didn’t seem right (i.e. should ask me every time or anyone could open it just by opening TT) but as of today it is asking for my password every time. Must have changed in the latest SW update.

Then this time I had to answer more questions than when I tried yesterday before I got to where I could I finally try to import from Fidelity and like yesterday it worked. At this point 1) go to fidelity.com in a new browser tab and you’ll see you are still logged in! Not good but just log out. Then 2) if you need to import from another Fidelity account follow the advice previously posted about deleting Fidelity cache and cookies first and then try to import. I didn’t need that.

At this point I saved my online return to my Mac. Again under Tools in the sidebar menu. At least in Safari on my Mac when I clicked on “Save your 2022 return to your computer” it looked like nothing happened. Clicked the link a couple of times and then noticed in the finder a file started downloading anyway.

Opened TT desktop and closed the return I had already started. Went to File, “Open tax return” to open the saved online file. To continue the string of annoyances, had to answer a bunch of questions that I just answered online. At least the old info was there to confirm. And then of course I had to re-import my W2 info but at least that’s all the farther I had gotten to before.

Now, for the complete answer you’ve all been waiting for, drumroll, yes it appears my both 2021 data and my fidelity import data is all there. I should be excited but I am too annoyed to be excited. And I say “appears" to be because I don’t trust this sh!tshow process yet and in the import summary it says 10 items but when I click on “View” only my W2 shows in the list. A quick scan around at various forms though I can see some 1099 data there. Will see as I go through it all.

Now the last thing to do will be to figure out how to completely delete everything in the online version. Clearing and starting over didn’t do that. Still had my prior year data in there. I don’t want my data in their cloud.

Good luck if you try this.

Fidelity Investment import not working.

So glad you found a solution…. Sounds Very complicated for someone a bit older or perhaps not so computer savvy. Years past the import just magically happened and all data uploaded. Definitely do not think TurboTax 2022 would be considered an improvement. This appears to be a TT issue not Fidelity.

@scottvf

You see this error when using TT online product?

I was able to import from Fidelity using TT online.

It feels like there are multiple issues with importing Tax forms with different modes of failures. It feels like Intuit completely dropped the ball on testing this feature this year. Very disappointed :(

Fidelity Investment import not working.

The ability to import a complex 1099 is why people purchase TurboTax in the first place.

A couple of months ago, they did not have the Premium Tax Credit form working correctly for those making over 400% of federal poverty level.  Their reps insisted that folks weren't eligible for any credit and had to repay 100% of any premium subsidy, which just wasn't true.  After dozens of people on the message board (including me) pointed TT in right direction, and told them exactly which lines of the form needed to be reprogrammed, they finally produced a software update making the fix.  But the difficulty they had even comprehending the problem (and following the law) gave me pause about continuing to use TurboTax.

Now I can't download my 1099 from Fidelity and the reps are saying they don't even know if they are working on the problem.  I've checked with Fidelity customers using other tax software and they are not encountering any issues with their imports.

Pretty certain TT will be losing a 20+ year customer next year!

Fidelity Investment import not working.

I never use the online product. Only software

Fidelity Investment import not working.

Yep, 14 year TT user here and they are about to lose me also.  I can't believe TT has not made this a priority item to fix.  Now the big question, has anyone here tried switching to HR Block software and see if that worked?  I'm sure TT not happy with asking questions about a competitor on this board, but, hey guys, this problem was brought up on Jan 31 and you still haven't fixed it!!!  I'm not going to wait till April 14 to see if this gets fixed.

I threw in the towel today and just entered the data manually. Yes it’s annoying and a pain but really wasn’t bad or take very long.  As long as all your stock transactions are “covered”, ie cost basis reported to the IRS by Fidelity, you can just enter bottom line summary and NOT have to mail anything into the IRS with detail. The 1099B tells you if it’s reported or not, and for me everything was except a couple of bonds I sold.

But yep, a massive failure by TurboTax this year after many many years of no issues.  Gonna lose a lot of customers after this goat rodeo.

Now they have a new error message when attempting the import from Fidelity, so this pretty much confirms they aren't working on a fix:

Fidelity Investment import not working.

Unbelievable. Despite these 2 articles, both just updated this January that say 10,000 (copied the limits here in case they change them soon).

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/banking/import-1099/L73REMMxe_US_en_US

It’s important to also make sure your transactions don’t exceed the limits TurboTax is equipped to handle:

  • Both TurboTax Online and TurboTax CD/Download can support up to 10,000 of any combination of transactions and imports
  • TurboTax Online can support up to 4,000 non-covered transactions (items such as options or cryptocurrency that aren't reported to the IRS)
  • The import file size is limited to 4MB

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/import-export-data-files/[product key removed]actions-turbotax-handle/L43xEe8zR_US_en_US (this stupid tool keeps screwing up this link. Replace "[product key removed]" with "many-stock" and "-trans")

TurboTax Online can handle up to 10,000 transactions per brokerage account. However, online performance may deteriorate as you get closer to this limit.

TurboTax CD/Download can also handle up to 10,000 transactions per brokerage, and you can enter the transactions on Form 8949 using summary data from your broker statements.

I see you use Deluxe. Wonder if Premier is the same now. Might want to try the workaround I did using TT online (before they screw that up) or just get your money back and switch to something else.

Fidelity Investment import not working.

The 2,000 limit error message in TT Deluxe Desktop happened when only attempting to do an import of about 50 transactions from another Fidelity brokerage account.

I went the route of starting a return in TT Premier Online so I could import 2,067 1099-B sales from one of my Fidelity accounts (turns out I didn't have 3,500 after all -- that was just an estimate based on the # of pages in the PDF).  Then I exported the Online .tax file to my computer and opened it up in TT Deluxe Desktop.  There was the Fidelity 1099-B's 2,067 line items in all their glory.  OK, I thought, I'll now continue with the imports from my other brokerage accounts.  It wouldn't allow me to import any of them as it could see my working Desktop return already contained more than 2,000 transactions.   So that must be a hard cap that they have imposed, along with the new error message prompting me to bail out and request a refund.

So I suppose my only option is to continue with TT's Online Premier product.  It seems to be the only route for those of us having more than 2,000 1099-B transactions.

I did some research on H&R Block's options for those of us with a high # of transactions.  It seems they limit you to 250-500 line items if you use their Desktop product.  However, their Online tax software allows an "unlimited" number:

https://www.mybrokerageinfo.com/app/literature/view?itemCode=9894698&renditionType=pdf

Everything is moving to the cloud, and "desktop" software is quickly becoming a dinosaur.  We see clearly that both TT and H&R are giving emphasis and expanded capabilities to their online products, so us Desktop users should probably get with the times.

Fidelity Investment import not working.

Except I don't want my data in their cloud. They will keep it after you file and they didn't say for how long. So assume for a long time.

"Once you've paid or registered, we're required to store copies of your return."

Try importing all data from your various accounts into the online version first, then save the file and load into your desktop version. Then clear the online version.
