I have couple of friends living with me in the same household (personal property) but I do not charge rent as they are very close to me. We share the expenses for utilities and groceries so in no way they are contributing towards rent in any ways. Can I claim this as a gift when filing my return and if yes can you please give me more details about this?

No you cannot claim gifts on your tax return.
Actually gifts are never claimed, only charitable contributions to a qualified charity can be claimed. The people living with you would not meet that criteria.
